Mole Information
- The eastern mole is the most common species found in the Twin Cities area.
- Adult moles weigh 3 to 5oz and measure 6 to 8 inches long.
- On average one mole will consume more than 50 pounds of earthworms and other insects per year.
- Moles can excavate about 18 feet of new tunnels in one hour.
- Moles can travel thru existing tunnels at approximately 80 feet per minute.
- Earthworms are the moles main food source. But moles will also consume grubs and other insects.
- Moles are solitary animals spending most of their time underground.
- Most homeowners will never see a mole only the damage it has left behind.
- Moles have one litter per year in the spring. Litter size varies from two to six young moles.
- Moles breathe easily underground because they contain twice as much blood and hemoglobin as similar size mammals.
